Pharaohs of the New Kingdom

Chronological List

The Praenomen of Ramesses IIThe names (nomen) of the pharaohs have a variety of English spellings due to the fact that Egyptian hieroglyphs only contain the consonantal elements of the language. For ease of reference, this site uses the most commonly applied spellings, but also quotes the more popular alternatives.

The royal titulary is the standard naming convention which symbolises their worldly power and spiritual might. The full royal titulary consists of five names: the Horus name, the Nebty name, the Golden Horus name, and the two names found in cartouches, the Praenomen or Throne Name and the Nomen or Personal name.

The photograph (right) is of a gold pectoral incorporating the praenomen of Ramesses II found in the Serapheum at Saqqara.

The full titulary for Ramesses II reads:

........i....Horus Name: Kanakht Merymaa (The strong bull, beloved of right)

.............Nebty Name: Mekkemetwafkhasut (Protector of Egypt)

Horus of Gold Name: Userrenput-aanehktu (Rich in years, great in victories)

..............Praenomen: Usermaatre-setepenre (The justice of Re is powerful, chosen by Re)

.....................Nomen: Ramesses meryamun (Ramesses, Re has fashioned him)

* The dates quoted for the reigns are open to debate. The chronology of the Egyptian pharaohs varies considerably, depending on the source (by as much as 350 years according to David Rohl's book, 'A Test of Time'). The dates used here represent the current concensus and although they may be inaccurate, they allow the pharaohs and their reigns to be related, one to the other.
