Tombs KV62 - KV63

Tomb KV62

Tomb KV62, located in the East Valley, was the burial place of the eighteenth dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamun. The tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922 underneath the remains of workmen's huts built during the Ramesside Period.
..
KV62 - entranceThe tomb was robbed at least twice in antiquity, judging by the three different sets of seals on the doorways, signifying three different closures of the tomb. The looters appear to have reached as far as the burial chamber, but did not breach the sealed doors of the shrines surrounding the sarcophagus.
..
After the final restoration of the burial, perhaps under Horemheb, the location of the tomb was lost as the debris from subsequent tomb construction filled the floor of the centre of the Valley.
..
Located in the main wadi, the entrance (B) is cut into the floor of the valley below the beginning of the entry ramp of the tomb of Ramesses V/VI (KV9). In the photograph on the left KV62 is at the bottom while KV9 is immediately above it.
..
KV62 - Plan looking northA modern protective wall with an additional flight of steps (A) surrounds the entrance to the tomb. From the stepped entrance (B) a sloping corridor (C) leads to a rectangular antechamber (D) with a side chamber (E).

The burial chamber (F) opens off the right end of the antechamber (D) and is approximately one metre lower. Another side chamber (G), is located off the right wall of the burial chamber.

The walls of the tomb are rough and undecorated, with the exception of the burial chamber which were smoother and decorated on a golden yellow background with scenes from the Opening of the Mouth ritual, apes from the first hour of the Amduat (pictured below), the Book of the Dead, and representations of the king with various deities. The figures are in a non-traditional style.

KV62 appears to have been originally intended for a private individual or minor member of the royal family. When it was taken over for the burial of Tutankhamun, the tomb was extended with the addition of the burial chamber (F) and side chamber (G).

Some have theorized that when Tutankhamun died suddenly at an early age, the tomb that was originally intended for him in the West Valley (WV23 or WV25) was not ready, and that he was buried in the main valley instead in a tomb originally earmarked for Ay. According to this theory, Ay later took the West Valley tomb (WV23) after succeeding Tutankhamun to the throne.

The burial chamber was occupied by a series of gilded wooden shrines, pictured below right. The outer shrine (1) measured 5.08m by 3.28m by 2.75m high, almost entirely filling the room. Around the outer shrine were 11 paddles for the 'solar boat', containers for scents, and lamps decorated with images of the god Hapi.

KV62 - Burial chamber and outer sarcophagusThe innermost shrine (4) measured 2.90m by 1.48m. The walls were decorated by the king's funeral procession, with Nut painted on the ceiling, embracing with her wings the granite outer sarcophagus (a), pictured left. In each corner a protective goddess (Isis, Nephthys, Serket and Neith) guards the body.

Inside the granite sarcophagus, the king's body was placed within three further mummy form sarcophagi (b, c and d), the innermost being made of 110.4kg of pure gold. Inside this the mummy itself was wearing the well known funerary mask composed of gold, lapis lazuli, carnelian, quartz, obsidian, turquoise and glass paste and weighed 11kg.

Tomb KV63

Tomb KV63, located in the East Valley, was initially thought to be an eighteenth dynasty royal tomb, but it is now believed to have been a storage chamber for the mummification process. Located in the area between the tombs of Amenmesse (KV10) and Tutankhamun (KV62), the tomb was discovered in 2005 by a team lead by Otto Schadern.

KV63 - site of tombFrom the bottom of a 5m deep vertical shaft, a door leads directly to a small rectangular chamber.

The chamber contained seven wooden coffins including one for a child and one for a small infant. Two of the adult coffins and the child's coffin feature yellow funerary masks; the others have black funerary masks. All coffins have now been opened, and were found to contain only mummification materials. Also found in the tomb were 28 storage jars containing mummification supplies similar to those from KV54, the Tutankhamun cache. There were quantities of natron in the chamber, some inside the coffins and some inside little sacks.

The identity of the owners of the coffins is unknown. It is possible that the coffins were added to the chamber over a period of time. Due to its proximity to the tomb of Tutankhamun and the resemblances between the portraits in the sarcophagi, as well as the style contemporary to the 18th Dynasty, it has been speculated that the coffins were once used for the bodies of Kiya and/or even Ankhesenamen.
